College football rivalries: Ranking the 10 best rivalry trophies
By Phil Poling
4. Iowa vs. Minnesota – Floyd of Rosedale
The Big Ten features plenty of great rivalry trophies, including the Floyd of Rosedale awarded to the victors of Iowa versus Minnesota. The story of its inception, however, is pretty unique.
After a contentious game in 1934, a back-and-forth ensued between Iowa Governor Clyde Herring and Minnesota Attorney General Harry Peterson. Minnesota Governor Floyd Olson stepped in and wagered a Minnesota prize hog against an Iowa prize hog to be delivered to the victors following the game. Minnesota won, and Herring picked up a prize hog and personally delivered him to Olson’s office.
The Gophers own the all-time series, 62-48-2, but the Hawkeyes carry a four0game win streak into their 2019 bout on Nov. 16. If they’re able to win again, it’ll match their longest win streak in the rivalry; Minnesota’s longest streak is 12 wins.
This matchup rarely has national title implications, but it’s still a fun rivalry. Receiving a bronze pig after defeating your rival? I’d rather have one I could actually eat, but a trophy would suffice.
