Honorable mentions

Several matches throughout the last decade could very well be included on this list. The first that comes to mind is AJ Styles and John Cena from SummerSlam 2016. It was a dream match that a year or two prior, nobody thought they would see. With Styles fresh out of IMPACT Wrestling and Japan, he made his big debut at the Royal Rumble and has been a mainstay ever since.

2004 saw a submission match between Eddie Guerrero and Kurt Angle. These two were solid gold every time they stepped through the ropes, and it’s easy to see how this could have made the list as well.

The matches that were included here were primarily the foundation for one of the original pay-per-view events on the WWE calendar. From the ultra-quick Honky Tonk Man-Ultimate Warrior match to the meeting of Hulk Hogan and Randy Orton, these were the matches that helped build one of the top events in all of WWE.

The beauty of SummerSlam is it resets the landscape around the company. A lot of rivalries and feuds are finally put to rest, and it clears the path for the second half of the year. Some of the biggest names in history have competed at the event through the years, and the talent will only continue to get better as time goes on.
