1991: Intercontinental Championship — Bret Hart vs. Mr. Perfect

Mr. Perfect was widely regarded as one of the purest gifted athletes in wrestling history. And at SummerSlam 1991, he defended the Intercontinental Championship against Bret “Hitman” Hart. It was a big opportunity for Hart, who was coming off years of tag team success with Jim Neidhart. But the Hitman was becoming a singles competitor and quickly gaining success and impressing the right people. It landed him a shot against Mr. Perfect in what would be one of the more talked about matches over the years.

Any time these two would step in the ring, it was guaranteed to be an incredible match. It started off at a quick pace, with Hart having an answer for everything Perfect threw at him. If you’re a fan of pro wrestling or you are a wrestler looking for matches to study, this was definitely one to put on the list.

Perfect used The Coach, who was in his corner, to his advantage with distractions and a constant nuisance with his whistle. But Hart was prepared for everything and would lock in a devastating Sharpshooter for the win. The victory gave Hart his very first singles championship and launched a meteoric career that saw two Intercontinental Title reigns and then five WWF Championships before his 1997 departure.

Perfect would compete throughout 1991 and into 1992, before back issues forced him into retirement. He would resurface in 1995 as a member of the broadcast team, before taking off for WCW in 1996 as part of the nWo during the Monday Night Wars.
