West Ham appears to have enjoyed a good transfer window under new sporting director Mario Husillos. The Argentine was appointed back in June, having previously worked with current West Ham manager Manuel Pellegrini at Malaga, and Husillos has already orchestrated two potential landmark signings for the club in the form of Sebastien Haller and Pablo Fornals.
French striker Haller had looked a star in the making at Frankfurt for a couple of years and always seemed much better suited to the rough and tumble of the Premier League than his more hyped ex-teammate Luka Jovic. Similarly, Spanish attacking midfielder Fornals was a stand-out performer last term at struggling Villarreal.
Manchester City also seem to have bought well over the summer. Although Rodri was far from dazzling in the Community Shield game against Liverpool last Sunday, anyone who’s seen him over the past couple of seasons at Villarreal and Atletico Madrid knows what a good player he is.
Even more importantly, his signing addressed the single obvious area of weakness in City’s squad, namely the defensive midfield position, where there was previously no clear replacement for Fernandinho, who’s now well into his mid-30s.
And although the deal hadn’t yet been completed at the time of writing, the anticipated arrival of Joao Cancelo would represent a clear upgrade at right-back over the departing Danilo.
