After a couple of years of producing grimly effective football in the Premier League, last season Burnley were no less grim but considerably less successful. Given that their underlying numbers had never been impressive, the obvious conclusion was that Sean Dyche’s side’s luck had finally run out. And it’s hard to believe that many people outside of East Lancashire will be hoping that doesn’t continue this term.
Meanwhile, there’s optimism among the Southampton fanbase coming into the new campaign, despite the club only finishing last season five points clear of relegation. Two promising young forwards have been brought in over the summer – 22-year-old striker Che Adams from second-tier Birmingham City and Malian winger Moussa Djenepo from Standard Liege in Belgium.
The main reason for the feel-good factor among supporters, though, is their faith in manager Ralph Hasenhuettl. As he’d already shown during his time in Germany, Hasenhuettl seems to be at his best when his brief is to keep his side in the league, just as it was when he arrived at Southampton in December 2018. What remains to be seen, however, is whether he can get this team playing expansive football consistently.
