FanDuel MLB DFS Breakdown: Early Slate Bats
Individual Hitters
Cavan Biggio
Biggio is one of my favorite Toronto players today. A lot of attention has shifted to Bo Bichette since he has come up and hit the ball so well in his first few weeks, but Biggio has some of the best-batted ball data on the team and only a .209 batting average to show for it.
When he makes contact, the ball goes a long way and he has 10 homers already in only 250 plate appearances. Today he’ll face Chad Green, a righty who throws hard, and then Nestor Cortes, a lefty who relies on breaking pitches and changing arm angles. Cortes actually has some reverse splits, which makes me like Biggio here a lot despite the fact he hits righties better.
J.D. Martinez
Martinez is a no-brainer for cash games. He is a career lefty-masher and facing the left-hander Andrew Heaney who has a bad home run problem and is coming off the injured list. Martinez has been kind of streaky all season but right now looks pretty locked in at the plate with three homers in his last two games and a .517 batting average over his last 8 games.
Stacks
Boston Red Sox vs. Andrew Heaney
This may seem like chasing after they broke the slate last night, but the Sox are implied for 6.2 runs and in a great spot here against Heaney and an overworked Angels bullpen.
Boston’s lineup matches up well against lefties with the aforementioned Martinez, Betts, Boegarts, Vasquez, Sam Travis and Michael Chavis all having excellent platoon splits. Even light-hitting Sandy Leon is a viable option if he ends up starting and you need a punt as he homered two days ago.
Detroit Tigers vs. Mike Montgomery
Montgomery has been pretty mediocre for the Royals since entering their rotation recently. He simply doesn’t miss many bats with only a 15% K rate and has been hit hard (41% hard contact rate). In 16 innings with the Royals, he’s allowed 25 hits and 12 earned runs. He throws a two-seam fastball, curveball, and changeup and all three pitches have been hit hard.
The Tigers are usually a team we pick on with pitchers, but they have a Vegas total over five and some really good numbers against Montgomery’s pitch mix.
Brandon Dixon looks good in particular and the ageless Miguel Cabrera has shown some signs of life lately. They’re cheap and make for a really nice secondary stack to compliment the Red Sox if you end up spending up on Boston.
Let’s jump into the main slate now the same way I start my pitching primer, with my favorite pitchers for your cash games!
