The first weekend of the Premier League season concludes with arguably the biggest game of the season. On Sunday, Manchester United host Chelsea at Old Trafford. The Red Devils had a disappointing season, finishing sixth last season. Chelsea finished third, six points ahead of United.
Manchester United might have challenged for a top-four spot last season if they could have kept the ball out of their net. United conceded 54 goals last season, the ninth most goals allowed. The Red Devils went out and spent €142 million to improve their back four. United added full-back Aaron Wan-Bissaka after his breakout season with Crystal Palace and then made Harry Maguire the most expensive defender in history. The addition of Maguire will immediately improve United’s back four. To offset the big purchases, United sold Romelu Lukaku to Inter Milan. Lukaku scored 113 goals in his eight Premier League seasons. United will turn to Marcus Rashford to lead the attack. Rashford scored 10 goals last season and the 21-year-old could be primed for a breakout season.
It was a busy summer for Chelsea despite being under a transfer ban. The club underwent major turnover, seeing their manager and their best player leave the club. The Blues sold Eden Hazard to Real Madrid, with the Belgian superstar unwilling to extend his contract. Chelsea are hoping that American international Christian Pulisic can replace the offense that Hazard provided. The Blues bought Pulisic last winter, loaning him back to Borussia Dortmund where he finished the season. Manager Maurizio Sarri left for Juventus and was replaced by Chelsea legend Frank Lampard. In his only season as a manager, Lampard almost led Derby to a promotion into the Premier League, falling short in the playoff final.
