College football stadiums: Ranking the 10 best game-day experiences
By Phil Poling
There are plenty of excellent college football stadiums, each providing their own unique advantages. But which has the best game-day experiences?
Few audiences exude the same energy as a packed college football stadium on a fall Saturday. They often provide an adoring environment for their team’s players, usually a home-field advantage, and in most cases, a beautiful backdrop. It’s sometimes hard to quantify exactly what makes a stadium great, though – but you definitely know it when you see it.
Before getting into the ranking of the top 10 game-day experiences. These are the stadiums that just missed the cut: The Colorado Buffaloes’ Folsom Field, Georgia Tech’s Bobby Dodd Stadium, Iowa’s Kinnick Stadium, Notre Dame Stadium. Each of these fields is desirable destinations for any college football fan, especially for some of the traditions each hold.
Ben Hill Griffin Stadium, home to the Florida Gators, holds the sixth-most fans on our list with a capacity of 91,916. “The Swamp” is also one of the toughest places for visiting team’s to play. It’s named after alumnus and citrus producer Ben Hill Griffin.
Since 2010, the Gators have posted a 41-19 record at, “The Swamp,” including five wins against Top 10 teams. They’ve twice gone undefeated at home in that span, too, in 2012 (7-0) and 2016 (5-0).
The Swamp is rich with tradition as well, from the famous Gator Chomp to Mr. Two Bits. As the phrase goes, “Two-bits, Four-bits, Six-bits, a dollar. All for the Gators, Stand up and holler!”
