Coming in as the best mascot in college football is the Texas Longhorns’ steer Bevo. The horns give weight to the symbol and saying, “Hook ‘Em Horns,” and is orange and white to reflect Texas’s school colors.

Live-animal mascots are fun but in the right setting. Uga might’ve snuck into the No. 1 spot on our list if it weren’t for a tail-tucking experience before the Sugar Bowl in January. Bevo, being a 1,700-pound steer, was in an enclosed area with his handlers pre-game while Uga was outside said area on a leash. Tired of feeling contained, Bevo decided to plow through the barriers separating him and Uga. Luckily, Uga’s handler was paying attention and got him out of there.

There are plenty of other stories surrounding Bevo, too, like the origin of his name coming from rival-Texas Aggie fans who branded the score 13-0 into his side. They claim the 13 was turned into a B and the rest was worked out from there. Another story says he was named after the non-alcoholic “near-beer” Bevo created by Anheuser-Busch.

Whatever the origin, Bevo is the perfect college football mascot. He can get riled up when things go sideways, lead quite the charge (as Uga’s see first-hand), and he’s not some human in a 100-degree costume helmet. I can’t think of a more appropriate mascot.
