New Japan G1 Climax 29: Fallout, takeaways, what’s next
The G1 Climax 29 came to its fitting conclusion on Monday when Kota Ibushi became the 18th different winner of the tournament by defeating Jay White.
In this article we will be breaking down which champions took pins, who it was that scored the pin and the direction that decision lends itself towards. Everything is leading up to January 4 at Wrestle Kingdom 14.
Twenty men gathered to take part in the G1 Climax 29 and now that all 20 will be going their separate ways, the biggest question is: what’s next? Throughout the tournament we saw half a dozen champions take at least two falls. Those results will give clues as to what’s next for these competitors coming out of the G1.
The final day of the tournament saw a handful of immediate programs come into focus. Minoru Suzuki pinned the IWGP Heavyweight Champion, Kazuchika Okada, and declared himself the next challenger and Zack Sabre Jr. demanded a match with Hiroshi Tanahashi for the RevPro Undisputed British Heavyweight Championship to avenge his G1 loss.
KENTA attacked his tag team partner, Tomohiro Ishii, and turned to Bullet Club. This lead to an appearance from Katsuyori Shibata but the Bullet Club’s numbers were too strong for him to get his hands on KENTA for long. Ishii and KENTA will now exit the G1 with a rivalry.
All three of these programs are scheduled for August 31 at the Royal Quest event in London, England. These are only three directions the roster will be moving towards. This slideshow will be taking a look at all 20 men and analyzing their paths coming out of G1 Climax 29.
