New Japan G1 Climax 29: Fallout, takeaways, what’s next
Jon Moxley (5-4) – B-Block
Wins: Jeff Cobb, Tomohiro Ishii, Tetsuya Naito, Taichi & Shingo Takagi
Losses: Hirooki Goto, Juice Robinson, Jay White & Toru Yano
Starting his tournament off on a 5-0 hot streak, the IWGP U.S. Heavyweight Champion faded by taking four straight losses and failing to advance to the final. Moxley picked up wins over fellow champions, Tetsuya Naito and Tomohiro Ishii, but his tournament was derailed after a loss to Toru Yano.
Moxley’s fourth defeat is what sent him over the edge. On the final night of the B-Block, Juice Robinson beat Moxley in a clean fight despite Moxley’s best attempts to turn the match into a brawl. The following night Juice wouldn’t be so lucky as Moxley would put him through a table after their tag team match.
There are four men who all have claim at Moxley’s title but the post-match attack at the end of the tournament leads you to believe he has his eyes set on Juice. This would make sense considering that Moxley won the IWGP U.S. Heavyweight Championship from Juice back in June.
Hirooki Goto (5-4) – B-Block
Wins: Jeff Cobb, Tomohiro Ishii, Jon Moxley, Jay White & Toru Yano
Losses: Tetsuya Naito, Juice Robinson, Taichi & Shingo Takagi
One of four with a shot to take the B-Block on the final night, Goto once again came up short on delivering his promises. Instead he lost to NJPW’s newest heavyweight, Shingo Takagi. After starting his tournament with a statement win against Jay White, Goto struggled to find any consistency night in and night out.
Although he leaves the G1 with wins over both the IWGP U.S. Heavyweight Champion as well as the NEVER Openweight Champion, Goto has bigger fish to fry. On the final night of the tournament KENTA turned his back on the LA Dojo to join the Bullet Club.
Since his stablemate, Tomohiro Ishii, is the NEVER Openweight Champion and Jon Moxley seems to have other plans with the IWGP U.S. Heavyweight Championship, Goto’s goals will likely be to get revenge for his friend and trainer of the LA Dojo, Katsuyori Shibata.
