Vikings trying to get whatever they can for Laquon Treadwell

In his fourth training camp and with no sign he’s going to make an impact, the Vikings are trying to get whatever they can for Laquon Treadwell.

When a wide receiver is a first-round pick, without a run of injuries or a rash of off-field trouble, 56 catches for 517 yards and one touchdown would signal a disappointing (and perhaps abbreviated) rookie season. But that’s what Laquon Treadwell has done over three seasons, without a serious injury or any off-the-field transgressions.

Treadwell is at best the No. 5 wide receiver on the depth chart for the Minnesota Vikings right now, behind Stefon Diggs, Adam Thielen, Chad Beebe and Jordan Taylor. He is lingering as a cut candidate, but according to Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated, the Vikings are shopping the 23rd overall pick in the 2016 draft.

Treadwell is making $1.8 million this season, of which $1.15 million is guaranteed. So there’s no real financial implications for Minnesota if it just decided to cut him. But perhaps the Vikings could recoup the fifth-round pick they sent to the Baltimore Ravens for kicker Kaare Vedvik in a deal for Treadwell, and that might be the only intention.

For his part, via Chris Tomasson of the St. Paul Pioneer Press, Treadwell recently said he’s blocking out media coverage regarding his status on the Vikings’ roster.

"“I really don’t really pay attention to the media,’’ Treadwell said. “I’m just more on what’s going on in the building. … [The media is] a distraction. So I just put it on the distraction list.”"

One possible destination for Treadwell, if he were traded or released, is the Carolina Panthers. Offensive coordinator Norv Turner had the same job with the Vikings when Treadwell was drafted in 2016, presumably with some level of input into the pick, and he once somehow envisioned Treadwell becoming a Michael Irvin-type of physical receiver.
