If there’s one thing better than a game-winning scissor kick goal, then it’s a game-winning scissor kick goal against Barcelona. That’s exactly what Aritz Aduriz did to open this year’s La Liga campaign.

Even at the age of 38, Aritz Aduriz can’t help but keep scoring timeless bangers. In the 89th minute of Athletic Bilbao’s game against FC Barcelona in the 2019-20 La Liga season opener, Aduriz found himself in the right position at the top of the box and unleashed a peach of a volley to score the game’s lone goal to that point.

Aduriz’s scissor kick volley would prove to be the winner, sinking Barcelona, the reigning champions, in a massive upset for Bilbao.

Seriously, even on Matchday 1, this is going to end up being one of the best goals of the entire La Liga season, particularly since it came in the 89th minute to upset literally the league’s most dominant team.

Last season, Bilbao came in just eighth place and missed out on qualifying for European football, so this victory over Barcelona will hopefully be a huge confidence boost for the home side.

Meanwhile, Barcelona didn’t look like themselves without Lionel Messi, which doesn’t come as a surprise. Even so, fans would have expected a team that still had Antoine Griezmann and Ousmane Dembele in attack to muster a goal and more than two shots on target against a decent-but-not-great Bilbao side.

Luis Suarez’s calf injury in the first half complicated matters, but all in all, this was a disappointing outing for Barca. They aren’t done adding players, though, as Barca are still pursuing Neymar despite already spending more than 100 million euros to steal Antoine Griezmann from second-place team Atletico Madrid.

Aduriz and Bilbao are undoubtedly in a state of ecstasy following this wonderful goal and result, and it will be interesting to see how they follow it up next week against an easier opponent in Getafe.
