Atletico Madrid face Getafe at the Wanda Metropolitano on Sunday, August 18. Here’s all the info you need to watch.

There’s no doubt that this summer has been the biggest transition that Atletico Madrid have undergone since Diego Simeone took over in 2011. Four men who’d been mainstays of one of the world’s best defenses over the past half-decade have left: Diego Godin, Juanfran, Filipe Luis and Lucas Hernandez.

They at least haven’t joined any of Atleti’s La Liga rivals, instead departing to Brazil, Italy and Germany. The same cannot be said of talismanic striker Antoine Griezmann, of course, who’s signed for Barcelona.

At 28, the Frenchman might not have many peak years left, but he’d been the club’s leading scorer in each of the past five seasons. The considerable task of replacing him has fallen to teenage Portuguese forward Joao Felix, signed from Benfica for more than £110 million and who’s looked great in pre-season.

Getafe’s fifth-place finish last term was the best in the club’s history and, along with the team’s quarter-final appearance in the Copa Del Rey, cemented Getafe’s claim to be Madrid’s third team. It also saw them qualify for the Europa League for the first time since 2010.

This success is based primarily on a parsimonious back-line — only today’s opponents conceded fewer times in La Liga last season than Getafe’s 35 — as well as the goals of 37-year-old Jorge Molina and Jaime Mata, a mere whippersnapper in comparison at 30.
