Real Madrid face Celta Vigo at the Santiago Bernabeu on Saturday, August 17. Here’s all the info you need to watch.

For all his triumphs in the Champions League, a single La Liga title during Zinedine Zidane’s time in the Real Madrid dug-out is a poor return. And it’s abundantly clear that the Frenchman had no faith in being able to rectify that with last season’s squad.

As a result, Real Madrid have already spent close to £300 million this summer, with weeks still to go until the transfer window closes. Forwards Eden Hazard, Luka Jovic and Rodrygo and defenders Eder Militao and Ferland Mendy have all cost upwards of £40 million, with Hazard the most expensive at £90 million.

Madrid have managed to recoup in excess of £100 million through sales to date, and they’ve done so without allowing any of last season’s first-team mainstays to leave. Indeed, of the departing Mateo Kovacic, Marcos Llorente, Theo Hernandez and Raul de Tomas, all except Llorente were on loan last term.

Celta Vigo had a dreadful time last season, going through three managers, finishing just four points above the drop zone and only avoiding relegation due to the heroics of Iago Aspas. It’s been quite a decline for the Galician club – just a couple of years earlier, they’d been playing in the Europa League and reached the last four of the Copa del Rey.

The fixture list could hardly have been kinder to Real Madrid and, despite their difficulties last year, they’ll be expected to start the campaign with a win here.
