There’s a different feeling around the UCLA football program heading into the 2019 season. Coming off a 3-9 season in Chip Kelly’s first go-around, the Bruins have more confidence and that has a lot to do with sophomore Dorian Thompson-Robinson taking more of a leadership role.
All the news out of fall camp thus far has been positive concerning Thompson-Robinson and that’s music to the ears of Bruins fans everywhere.
Everyone was expecting Kelly to turn the offense into a juggernaut overnight, especially with a top-50 recruit like Thompson-Robinson in town, but the Bruins struggled quite a bit — outside of running back Joshua Kelley. The freshman quarterback from Bishop Gorman (Nev.) High threw for just over 1,300 yards and seven touchdowns with four picks and a 57 percent completion rate.
The numbers didn’t jump off the stat sheet, but it showed that he was capable of competing at the next level — though he didn’t stay healthy.
Now that he’s healthy and much more confident, building a strong connection with the UCLA offense this offseason, Thompson-Robinson is going to take off under Kelly in 2019.
