Confidence is not lacking with a kid like Sam Howell. The four-star true freshman originally committed to Florida State to play for Willie Taggart and the Seminoles, but he saw something with head coach Mack Brown at North Carolina that drew his attention. Would he become Brown’s next star gunslinger?

All signs point to yes, but he has to win the starting job first.

Howell told Ross Martin of 247Sports that he came to North Carolina to be the starter and that’s what he intends to do when the Tar Heels open the season against South Carolina.

The third-best dual-threat in the 2019 class, per 247Sports, is the most talented quarterback on North Carolina’s roster, he just needs to separate himself in the battle for the starting job. Once he realizes just how good he can be, he could become one of the best quarterbacks in the ACC not named Trevor Lawrence.

Howell has the body, at 6-foot-1 and 225 pounds, and the arm to open some eyes this season. He can flat-out sling it and he’s not afraid to tuck, run and even take some hits.
