Dortmund are doing their best to keep Jadon Sancho in 2020
Ahead of rumored interest from top Premier League clubs, Borussia Dortmund are already trying to do whatever they can to keep Jadon Sancho for at least one more season.
Jadon Sancho is just 19 years old, but he may already be the best player in the Bundesliga. After leading Borussia Dortmund to a 2-0 victory over rivals Bayern Munich in the DFL-Supercup, Sancho was once again involved in all the goals in BVB’s Matchday 1 victory demolition of Augsburg, who were a thorn in the Black and Yellow’s side last season.
All of the world’s top clubs will be interested in Sancho next summer, because while Dortmund were able to hold off Manchester United’s interest in 2019, it may not be as easy to convince Sancho to stay in 2020 if more clubs are interested.
But Dortmund have been proactive in their approach to keep Sancho in Nord Rhein-Westphalia for the long haul. According to a report from BBC Sport, Sancho recently agreed to a contract that will pay him 190,000 pounds per week at Dortmund, which represents a significant raise from his previous wages of around 40,000 pounds per week.
The BBC has not specified how long this new contract lasts, but if it is merely a raise without an extension, then the uber-talented winger will still be signed through 2022. That means unless if a team like United, Liverpool, or City is ready to give Sancho over 200,000 pounds per week, Sancho may not see an incentive in leaving a Dortmund side that looks ready to win its first Bundesliga title.
Dortmund’s ability to compete in the Champions League could be a deciding factor in Sancho’s future, as the allure of joining a powerhouse club like Liverpool or even Real Madrid could be difficult to turn down. But as Dortmund start making more money, winning more Bundesliga games, and attracting more top talents like Julian Brandt and Thorgan Hazard this summer, their ability to keep — and pay — their absolute best players will increase.
BVB fans still remember when Ousmane Dembele forced a move to Barcelona in order to leave for a bigger club, but others like Marco Reus and even recent signing Axel Witsel have elected to remain in Dortmund despite interest from clubs with bigger branding.
Something special seems to be brewing in Dortmund, and if they can manage to hold onto Sancho for at least one more season before cashing in, perhaps consistent Champions League success will be forthcoming. And if Dortmund can keep Sancho, arguably the world’s best young attacking player, for even longer, it may be time to rethink their reputation among the world’s elite as a mere “selling club”.
