Andrew Luck has shocked the Indianapolis Colts and the football world by calling it a career, citing mental fatigue by injuries as the reason.

No one expected Andrew Luck to use a late-night Saturday news dump to shock the NFL world.

Luck, who apparently was fatigued with injuries and rehab, is hanging up his cleats and calling it a career just seven seasons into his NFL career. When I mean no one saw this coming, I mean everyone was caught blindsided by his announcement, especially Colts fans, who were expecting their team to improve on a 10-6 season that came with a stunning Wild Card upset of the Houston Texans.

“I’ve been stuck in this process,” Luck told the media on Satruday night. “I haven’t been able to live the life I want to live. It’s taken the joy out of this game. The only way forward for me is to remove myself from football.”

The 2019 season was supposed to be one of glory for the Colts, but Luck continued to struggle with injuries, including a leg injury that kept him out of practice just a week ago. Perhaps it was during that time that Luck began to consider his future in football. How productive could he be to the Colts if he was consistently injured?

Football is one of the most violent professional sports in America, and for Luck to solider on through seven seasons is a remarkable achievement. However, even great players have to consider their future, especially in a career where longevity does not come as easy as it does in baseball, basketball, or even hockey.

So perhaps that was what was on Luck’s mind when he sat out of practice that week. In his report of his retirement, ESPN’s Adam Schefter said that the mental aspect of injuries finally took a toll on Luck, and it zapped him of the fire he had for the game and having time to mull about it only made that decision seem like an ominous one.

So where do the Colts go, now?

Their star quarterback is calling it quits, and the Colts are now suddenly thrust into an unknown future. That is for the Colts to hash out, though. Luck already knows where he will be heading after Sunday.
