In the light of Andrew Luck’s stunning retirement, the Indianapolis Colts’ season is now in the hands of backup quarterback Jacoby Brissett.

The NFL is reeling with the news that Andrew Luck is hanging up his cleats in the prime of his career, but no one is poised to gain more from this news than his former backup. With Luck riding off into the sunset, the Indianapolis Colts are now Jacoby Brissett’s team.

Brissett, a former third-round pick of the New England Patriots, made his NFL debut with New England during the 2016 season. After Jimmy Garoppolo got hurt while filling in for the first two games of Tom Brady’s suspension, Brissett started the next two, going 1-1 before yielding the stage to the returning legend.

With no need for Garoppolo and Brissett, the Patriots flipped Brissett to the Colts in 2017 in exchange for receiver Phillip Dorsett. Brissett ended up starting pretty much the whole year after Luck sat out with a serious shoulder injury, coming in relief of Scott Tolzien in the opener and throwing for 3,098 yards with 13 touchdowns against just seven interceptions.

One positive thing about Brissett is that he is mobile, a fact he demonstrated by rushing for 260 yards and four touchdowns in 2017. The Colts will need to make significant adjustments to their game plans now that Luck is gone, so a more run heavy attack may be the plan for this coming season. Either way, fans will be learning a lot more about Brissett’s long term potential sooner than we ever thought we would.
