Real Madrid face Valladolid at the Santiago Bernabeu on Saturday, Aug. 24. Here’s all the info you need to watch.

It was a curious opening day for Real Madrid away against Celta Vigo last Saturday. The club had spent £275 million on new players over the summer, but none of those signings were in the starting XI, with Eden Hazard and Ferland Mendy both out injured.

Yet despite doing everything in his power since the end of last season to drive Gareth Bale out of the club, head coach Zinedine Zidane nonetheless included the Welshman from the start. Bale repaid his manager’s newfound faith in him with an assist for Madrid’s opening goal.

Luka Modric then received his first La Liga red card early in the second half for an ugly foul – the Croatian’s insistence after the game that the contact on Denis Suarez had been accidental seemed disingenuous – before Luka Jovic made his Madrid debut, coming off the bench for the final 10 minutes.

Celta, a side that finished 16th last season, caused Madrid problems both before and after the sending off, and the final scoreline – 1-3 in Madrid’s favor – flattered Zidane’s team a little.

Meanwhile, today’s visitors Real Valladolid remain most famous not for their players but for being owned by ex-Madrid legend Ronaldo, who bought a majority stake in September 2018. Like their opponents here, they also enjoyed a somewhat fortunate victory last weekend.
