Jake Fromm leads an absolutely loaded offense in 2019 that should put up some crazy numbers and could lead Georgia football to the SEC title.
5. They play in the weaker SEC East
Unlike those unfortunate programs in the SEC West, Georgia doesn’t have to deal with overcoming Alabama to reach the SEC Championship every year. Not to mention having to fend off the likes of Auburn, LSU, and Texas A&M every season too. While the East isn’t a cakewalk, Florida has really been the only ones that have seriously threatened the Bulldogs’s crown over the past two seasons. In fact, either the Bulldogs or Gators have won the SEC East in six of the past eight seasons.
This year looks to be more of the same in that regard. Kentucky should regress after losing Benny Snell and Josh Allen to the draft, Missouri has talent but is under sanctions, and Tennessee always has hype but never lives up to it.
As long as things go how they should in the SEC East this season, it should be Georgia sitting at the top with a shot to play Alabama for the championship. If they can get there they certainly have the talent to overcome the king of the SEC.
4. Safeties are among the nation’s best
If you are thinking about testing the Georgia secondary, you may want to think again. Georgia safeties J.R. Reed and Richard LeCounte Jr. are the best two players on this Georgia defense, and that isn’t a dig at the rest of the defense. These guys are just really good.
They both led the Bulldogs in tackles last season with LeCounte racking up 74 and Reed coming in just behind him with 66. The defense was No. 20 in opponent passing yardage last season and that number should only go up with these two standouts anchoring the back end of the secondary.
3. D’Andre Swift is as dynamic as they come
D’Andre Swift ran for 1,049 and 10 touchdowns on 163 carries last season. That’s impressive even if you remove the fact that he had to split the rushing load with Elijah Holyfield who also ran for over 1,000 yards last season. With Holyfield gone, and no one to replace his production, Swift should get a majority of the carries this season and that could mean video game-like numbers for the Junior.
Swift was the No. 4 running back in the recruiting class of 2017. Now looking back on it, he can compete with Najee Harris, who was the No. 1 back in that class. Swift’s electric speed should be able to cut through the heart of SEC’s defenses this season and get the Bulldogs to the championship game. That should make for an epic battle between Harris and Swift for the title.
2. They have one of the best offensive lines in the country
Four out of five starters return to a group that was already one of the best lines in the country last season paving the way for two 1,000 yard rushers.
The Georgia offensive line has some serious NFL talent on it with tackle Andrew Thomas poised to be one of the first offensive linemen picked in the NFL draft next season. Thomas will head a fantastic group that also includes the likes of Isaiah Wilson, a 6-foot-7, 345-pound monster who will also be a star at the next level.
The line will continue to open huge holes for the speedy Swift to run through next season only adding to the junior’s numbers. The No. 1 job of the line, however, will be to protect star quarterback Jake Fromm so that he can get the ball in the hands of the playmakers.
1. Jake Fromm is one of the nation’s elite quarterbacks
It’s year three as the starting quarterback for Jake Fromm and while he won’t have Riley Ridley to throw to this season, Fromm isn’t a freshman anymore. He’s now a veteran in the college football game and even if there is a slight drop off from Ridley, the passing game should be as explosive as ever. Let’s be honest here though, with the insane recruiting classes that Georgia gets every year, someone like freshman George Pickens or Dominick Blaylock will make an immediate impact.
Fromm threw for just under 3,000 yards last season and 30 touchdowns. The 30 touchdowns rank in the top 10 and his 171.22 quarterback rating was fifth, behind Tua Tagovailoa, Kyler Murray, Will Grier and Dwayne Haskins. Good company to be in.
Unfortunately for the Bulldogs, that means Fromm could be playing his final season in Athens with an eye on the NFL Draft this spring.
