After a decade-long stretch in which no club managed to retain the Premier League title, there’s no doubt that we’ve entered a period of dominance by Manchester City. And as good as Liverpool have been over the past year, the thing most likely to stop City appears to be Pep Guardiola suffering the same kind of burn-out that he did at Barcelona.
The scoreline in the 0-5 away win over West Ham on the opening day of the season may have been a little flattering, but City were clearly the better team overall. And the ensuing 2-2 stalemate with Tottenham was one of the most one-sided draws in living memory. That was followed by a routine victory at Bournemouth on Sunday.
It’s been a promising start for Brighton under Graham Potter, who replaced Chris Hughton as head coach in the summer.
His first two matches in charge produced an away win over Watford and then a draw against West Ham. And even though they lost 0-2 at home to Southampton last Saturday, Brighton had enjoyed the better of the chances prior to Florin Andone’s game-changing red card for a foul that was as unnecessary as it was unpleasant.
