Through three games this season, Southampton have three points after beating Brighton last weekend. On Saturday, the Saints host Manchester United at St. Mary’s Stadium. United have four points from their first three games but missed penalties have potentially cost them five points.
It is hard to get a read on Southampton after three games. The Saints were blown out by Burnley in their first game but played Liverpool tough in their second game. In their most recent game, Southampton defeated Brighton 2-0. Manager Ralph Hasenhuttl has got improved performances out of his team every game this season and the game Saturday against United will be an interesting test for Southampton. The way United are playing, the Saints could take a point from the Red Devils. If they can, that will give Hasenhuttl something positive to build the club’s season around.
After beating Chelsea 4-0 in their first game of the season, United have followed it up with a draw and a loss. A Paul Pogba cost United a win in their second game against Wolves. While a Marcus Rashford penalty potentially cost them a win against Crystal Palace. Ultimately, United lost 2-1 to Palace, after conceding a 93rd-minute goal. The start is incredibly disappointing for manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. The Red Devils immediately struggled after making Solskjaer the permanent manager last season and he could be on thin ice if he continues to drop points against teams that United should beat.
