The Texas Longhorns take College Football Playoff hopes into Week 1 as they welcome the Louisiana Tech Bulldogs to Austin on Saturday night.

Texas is back, for real this time. After hearing that so many times over the years, Tom Herman finally has the Longhorns in a legitimate position to be one of the top four teams in college football at the end of the season. Before that, though, they start the 2019 season by welcoming the Louisiana Tech Bulldogs to Austin.

Sam Ehlinger leads the charge for the Longhorns. The veteran quarterback has viable Heisman Trophy potential as he enters the 2019 season, having already showcased his ability to throw the pill around the field while also running tough when necessary. With a weapon like Collin Johnson aiding him, he’ll be just fine.

We should see the Texas offense out in full force against Louisiana Tech. Not only do they not have the athletes to match up with the Longhorns to begin with but the Bulldogs are also contending with the loss of star pass rusher Jaylon Ferguson to the NFL. Ehlinger and the Longhorns could have a field day against this defense.

If the Bulldogs have any hope, it’s the Texas defense that needs to replenish after losing several starters from 2018. Even with that, though, Louisiana Tech is fighting an uphill battle as they go on the road on Saturday.

This line feels incredibly low for a Longhorns team on a potential path to the College Football Playoff, so take the favorites playing at home here. Moreover, this is a Big 12 offense against a defense with questions and, additionally, a Big 12 defense that could let up. You should bet the over.

Prediction: Tom Herman’s team shouldn’t have much trouble in this season-opener, unlike in recent years. Ehlinger and the Longhorns offense should be able to move the ball at will against Louisiana Tech’s rebuilding defense and the Texas defense has enough athleticism to get stops. Burnt Orange Nation should be elated as they’ll cruise to a resounding victory at home in Week 1.

Score: Louisiana Tech 13, Texas 45
