There isn’t a rivalry match in the Premier League quite like the North London derby, which seems to get more heated with each passing year. The 2018-2019 derbies between Tottenham and Arsenal were the stuff of ages, and after the Gunners bolstered their attack with Dani Ceballos and Nicolas Pepe, this first fixture between the sides promises to be a thriller.
While Arsenal are coming off of a 3-1 drubbing at Liverpool’s hands, Tottenham didn’t look any better in an uninspiring 1-0 loss to Newcastle. They were caught on the break by Christian Atsu and Joelinton in the first half before failing to unlock Newcastle’s stingy defense, with Harry Kane putting forward an abysmal performance as the lone striker.
Kane and Spurs will have an easier time against a poor Arsenal defense that lacks tactical discipline under the underwhelming leadership of Unai Emery, and fans will hope that Christian Eriksen and Giovani Lo Celso can provide the missing moments of quality, specifically passing-wise, for a full 90 minutes on Sunday. Since Tanguy Ndombele is a doubt, it becomes even more important for others to step up in the midfield.
Arsenal’s individual talent is difficult to question, but their chemistry in the final third still needs developing. That said, if Pepe can hit the ground running and the Gunners can avoid woeful lapses of concentration defensively, they could claim all three points at the Emirates.
A tie would be the safest prediction here, but this honestly feels like anyone’s game. And given the way both teams want to play in the attack, a goal-scoring fest will be the expectation.
