Cagliari was at risk of relegation until almost the very end of last season and there have been plenty of changes at the club over the summer. Poster-boy Nicolo Barella joined today’s opponents for €37 million, with the gap his departure left in midfield being filled by a number of arrivals.
Marko Rog has come in from Napoli on loan and Uruguay international Nahitan Nandez was signed for a club-record £16 million from Argentine giants Boca Juniors. But the biggest headlines have been created by the return of Radja Nainggolan, who previously had a successful three-year stint at Cagliari from 2010.
Yes, it was only against newly-promoted Lecce, a club that had have never managed to win its opening Serie A game in 15 previous attempts. But Inter Milan still looked ominously good during Antonio Conte’s first competitive game in charge, with the four-goal margin of victory not flattering his side.
Romelu Lukaku scored on his full debut and Stefano Sensi was impressive. With the aforementioned Barella coming on in the second half for Matias Vecino, Sensi being replaced by Roberto Gagliardini and Borja Valero not even making it onto the pitch, Inter look to have one of the most well-stocked midfields in Europe.
