21. Philadelphia Phillies

No team in MLB history has lost more games than the Phillies franchise, but they’re still the last team standing in Philadelphia after the A’s moved on to greener pastures. It’s not totally fair to dump on the Phillies franchise for being the first to lose 10,000 MLB games, but their uniforms are fair game. You would think a team that has been around since the end of the 1800s would have come up with a better uniform design at some point.

Pinstripes for the sake of pinstripes does not make a baseball uniform better, and that’s what it feels like with the Phillies home uniforms. Granted, the team has worn pinstripes at different times in their history, but the current home uniforms had the pinstripes added back in the early 1990s. Going back to the pinstripes after so many years without them just feels gimmicky to me. There are enough teams in baseball with pinstripes on their uniforms.

The text across the chest does mimic earlier designs in the team’s long history, but it looks too cartoonish and silly to be taken seriously on a professional team’s jersey. The stars do add a little bit of flair, however. Overall, the uniforms closely resemble the design the team used in the 1940s and 1950s.

The best Phillies jerseys and uniforms came in the 1970s when the team was heavy in its maroon and powder blue phase. Those remain the best in the franchise’s lengthy history. They’re much more unique than the current design, but the Phillies appear committed to their red and pinstripes for now.
