Fantasy Football 2019: Week 1 news and notes
By Bill Pivetz
There have been some interesting news and notes released that could change the outlook for week 1 of the fantasy football season.
The fantasy football season is just a day away, starting on Thursday with the Packers and Bears. As teams begin to finalize their starting rosters and signing players, they revealed some interesting notes about some fantasy-relevant players. This could change the outcome for week 1.
But some of this news is just for week 1. So if you have a player that is listed as a backup or won’t start, don’t fret. Your sleeper pick is still worth holding onto. Week 1 hasn’t even started, so don’t make any rash decisions.
So, if you haven’t been keeping up, here’s what some teams announced heading into Week 1 of the 2019 fantasy football season.
Matt Breida Starting for SF
When the 49ers brought in Tevin Coleman, many thought he would be the starter. He looked good in Atlanta and with the current group of running backs in San Francisco, he was the best of the bunch.
However, Jerick McKinnon got hurt, which cleared up the picture a bit. But Kyle Shanahan is going with the player he knows in Breida. He’ll get more carries, but Coleman will be on the field for the passing downs.
Coleman is a low-end flex play in PPR leagues as a result.
Devin Singletary Listed as the Backup
After LeSean McCoy was cut by the Bills, everyone was rushing to the waiver wire to pick up the rookie. It’s a good move. Singletary is going to be on the field a lot this season, just not in week 1.
The Bills will go with the veteran in Frank Gore as their starter against the Jets. Even when Gore goes to the bench, he’s still going to factor in the running game. Also, don’t forget about T.J. Yeldon.
Singletary has RB2 upside. But with Gore, Yeldon and even Josh Allen taking away some goal line carries, his scoring potential is limited.
D.K. Metcalf is Seattle’s WR2
The Seahawks wide receiving corps is weak heading into this season. The loss of Doug Baldwin hurts Russell Wilson, but does help Tyler Lockett. In order to help, they drafted Metcalf.
He had minor knee surgery about a month ago, so seeing him as a potential starter is a good thing. Outside of Lockett, Jaron Brown is the only other receiver that could take targets away.
I don’t trust rookie receivers as much as running backs but in an offense with few weapons, but Metcalf is going to make an impact.
Other notes: Peyton Barber starting; Derrius Guice starting over Adrian Peterson
The running back situation for a lot of teams is going to change multiple times throughout the year. There are very few teams with a bellcow running back. It’s just week 1 so no need to worry. If we’re seeing the same thing after week 3 or 4, then you may have to make a change.
