Kansas City Chiefs make protected investment in Tyreek Hill
Through most of the offseason it seemed to be off the table, but the Kansas City Chiefs have signed wide receiver Tyreek Hill to a contract extension.
On Thursday, Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports reported the Kansas City Chiefs were working on a contract extension with wide receiver Tyreek Hill. On Friday, according to multiple reports, the two sides have agreed to a three-year, $54 million deal that will go through the 2022 season ($35 million guaranteed, according to Pro Football Talk).
At one point early in the offseason, the Chiefs seemed ready to make Hill the highest-paid wide receiver. But an alleged abuse incident involving his young son, and what seemed to a recorded threat to his fiance, put him in the cross hairs of the NFL’s Personal Conduct Policy. Hill has not been suspended though, and presumably will not be suspended as long as he meets certain conditions, and he rejoined the Chiefs at the start of training camp in July.
In the statement announcing the extension, Chiefs general manager Brett Veach cited the deal being subject to those same conditions:
"We’re pleased we were able to reach an agreement with Tyreek to keep him in a Chiefs uniform for the foreseeable future. He understands our expectations of him as a member of this team and community. This extension is contingent upon the conditions Tyreek agreed to adhere to upon his return to the team in July."
Hill’s $18 million per year average ties him with Odell Beckham Jr. for the second-highest among wide receivers, pending a looming new contract for Julio Jones. But the three-year term is surely shorter than he would have gotten in March when talk of a huge deal surfaced, and the Chiefs seem to be well-protected if Hill has another off-field incident or if his child abuse case gets reopened from a legal perspective.
