Chiefs vs Jaguars Week 1 breakdown

Week 1 is just a little over 24 hours away from kicking into high gear and the Chiefs visiting the Jaguars has to be one of the most exciting matchups of the week!

This Chiefs vs Jaguars Week 1 contest is very interesting because of the contrast of the Jaguars defense and the Chiefs offense. Both are among the elite units in football when they are on their A-game but the Chiefs offense is so good it’s not a major decision with some of those players to be in your lineup.

If you took quarterback Patrick Mahomes in the 3rd, you’re not going to bench him here but the Jags did give up the 10 fewest points to quarterbacks. They only gave up 20+ points five times, not including a meaningless Week 17 game. Four of those five games required the player to rush for over 80 yards or throw for 3 touchdowns, which is in the outcomes for Mahomes. It just isn’t super likely and Mahomes could be more human in Week 1.

For the wide receivers, you have to start Tyreek Hill if you have him. Yes, the matchup with Jalen Ramsey is tough and Ramsey only allowed a 73.8 passer rating. With the speed of Hill, it only takes one play to pay off for a long touchdown. Sammy Watkins might wind up seeing a couple of extra targets if Hill is being blanketed, deist his difficult spot against AJ Bouye. Mecole Hardman is probably only lined up for around 4-5 touches, maybe.

The status for Damian Williams hinges on the status of LeSean McCoy for me. If McCoy is active, I would likely have a backup plan to start over Williams. Yes, you spent a high pick on Williams but that was likely before the signing of McCoy. With both players active, it’ll be tough to guess the split and the Jags gave up the sixth-fewest points to running backs. Only one player went over 20 and that was Derrick Henry towards the end of the season.

Given the consistency of Travis Kelce(held under 50 yards just twice last season), you’re playing him every week despite the tough spot.

Provided the weather holds up, Nick Foles might be one the best value plays from the quarterback position and would be a streamer if for some reason you needed one. They gave up the fifth-most points to the quarterback and the game script should be useful. This game is the highest over/under on Sunday as of this writing, so Las Vegas believes Jacksonville is going to be trailing here.

Kansas City gave up the fifth-most rushing yards last yearn and the Jags may want to grind the game down if it’s close and they are winning. Still, Leonard Fournette would have caught about 45 passes last, year, which is still so weird to me.

Dede Westbrook is primed for a big game since corner Kendall Fuller gave up more than 500 passing yards out of the slot and that’s where Westbrook lined up for the majority of his preseason snaps. Foles loved him and he got seven targets in the half that he played in the preseason. The roles behind Westbrook are very uncertain, so it’s hard to know what’s in store for Chris Conley, Marquise Lee and Keelan Cole.

This game is really going to be a lot of fun with contrasting styles and could certainly be one of the highest-scoring contests of the week. There’s also plenty of fantasy points to be had, on paper. Just remember what Week 1 football looked like on Thursday.
