Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback Nick Foles exited his first game with the team with a shoulder injury, and it looks like he will miss a significant period of time.

As expected, the Jacksonville Jaguars had a rough time dealing with Kansas City Chiefs superstar quarterback Patrick Mahomes, who led the AFC West champions to a 40-26 victory. The Jaguars managed to make things interesting despite losing starting quarterback Nick Foles to an early injury, as sixth-round rookie Gardner Minshew completed 22 of 25 passes for 275 yards.

The Jaguars will need more heroics from Minshew, because it looks like Foles will miss a huge period of time.

See, Foles didn’t just injure his shoulder while dropping a 35-yard touchdown to speedster DJ Chark. According to The Athletic’s Phillip Heilman, Foles broke his left clavicle.

It’s a tough blow for the Jaguars, and it’s worse to hear that Foles has suffered such a significant injury, especially in just his first regular season game with the team. Foles is expected to take Jacksonville’s offense, which has a host of promising receivers like Chris Conley and Dede Westbrook, to the next level as a significant upgrade over Blake Bortles.

More details will come from the Jaguars and head coach Doug Marrone, but it looks like Foles will miss a couple of months with this injury. He’ll most likely be placed on the injured reserve, with the possibility of returning once healthy.

But if Minshew can somehow keep playing well, perhaps he’ll “Wally Pipp” the former Super Bowl champion. Minshew put up huge numbers in Mike Leach’s offense and was a top-five Heisman candidate, though it’s difficult to read into a performance against a lousy Chiefs pass defense.

Still, Minshew shined, and the Jaguars can only hope he can continue to play well. They have all-important games in a wide open AFC South coming up next against the Houston Texans and the Tennessee Titans.
