PGA power rankings: A Military Tribute at The Greenbrier

10. Byeong-Hun An – (48)

With the incredible ball-striking talent that An is, it has been noted in this article and elsewhere from time to time that his putter is his nemesis. An has not teed it up here at The Old White TPC as this will be his first Military Tribute at The Greenbrier, but he did close the 2018-2019 season in good enough form to crack the top-ten for the first PGA power rankings of the season.

After struggling for a good part of the spring, An started his best run of the year with a T-17 at the Memorial Tournament in June, and he followed that with a T-16 at the U.S. Open which was the 27-year-old’s best finish in a major championship to date.

He had another solid finish at the inaugural Rocket Mortgage Classic in Detroit where he T-13, and he went into the FedEx Cup playoffs off a solo third-place finish at the Wyndham Championship. An’s season then ended at the BMW Championship where he T-28.

9. Scott Piercy – (70)

Piercy was dialed-in for a good portion of last season, as he has worked his way from being the 152nd ranked golfer at the end of 2018, to where he is now at number 70. The 40-year-old has won just three times on tour in his career with the last coming at the 2015 Barbasol Championship, but he just missed a couple of times last season with a T-3 at the RBC Heritage and a T-2 at the AT&T Byron Nelson.

Piercy notched additional top-20’s thereafter at the Charles Schwab Challenge and the 3M Open, but was ultimately ousted at the BMW Championship where his T-37 was not enough to get him to the TOUR Championship. He is a regular here for the most part at the Greenbrier, but it has been a mixed bag of results. A horrible weekend led to a 74th place finish last year, and he has also missed two cuts coming back in 2011 and 2013. His best finish was a T-12 in 2012.

8. Kevin Na – (34)

It was a whirlwind end of the season for Kevin Na, that ended with him pulling out of the BMW Championship to be with his wife as the couple was expecting their second child. He was all over the map this season while battling a couple of different injuries along the way, but his win at the Charles Schwab Challenge which was sandwiched between two missed cuts was the catapult he needed to get him relatively deep into the FedEx Cup playoffs.

As mentioned in the introduction, Na is a past champion here at the Greenbrier with his victory last season, and he was able to grab an additional top-ten with a T-7 back in 2012. He has teed it up here at The Old White TPC five times total over the last ten years.

7. Bubba Watson – (25)

Watson is a Florida native and former Georgia Bulldog. However, it is also well known that he has a second home here at The Greenbrier which succumbed to the June 2016 floods which canceled this event. Watson, his wife Angie, and their two children were in that home when 11 inches of rain fell in one day causing the most destructive floods in West Virginia history, and they were quick to help out and give back to their community and relief efforts with a $250,000 donation.

While he has never won here at The Old White TPC, Watson does have some of the better course history among those in the field. He has played here in each of the last five years, excluding 2016 of course when it was canceled, and has not missed a cut. Bubba has three top-20’s in total, including a T-13 last year when he finished 9-under par.

6. Marc Leishman – (24)

Speaking of all over the place and up-and-down last season, enter Marc Leishman in the six-spot in the PGA power rankings this week. Leish started 2019 strong with back-to-back top-fives in Hawaii at the Sentry TOC and the Sony Open, and after a T-4 at the Genesis Open, things went south overall for the most part.

There were a few bright spots along the way such as his solo third-place finish at the FedEx St. Jude Invitational, but there was virtually zero success for Leishman at the four major championships. He missed the cut at the Open Championship and at the PGA Championship, and his best finish came at the U.S. Open where he T-35. The 35-year-old Aussie returns to The Greenbrier for the first time since 2015, when he missed the cut.
