Lyon face Zenit St. Petersburg at the Groupama Stadium on Tuesday, Sept. 17. Here’s all the info you need to watch.
The Champions League returns on Tuesday with the first game of the group stage. In Group G, the most wide-open group in the tournament, Lyon host Zenit St. Petersburg. The two clubs are joined in the group by RB Leipzig and Benfica. Unlike the other seven groups, where there are two clear favorites to advance, Group G could see any two of the four teams advance.
Lyon finished third in Ligue 1 last season. In their return to the Champions League last season, Lyon made it out of the group stage but were eliminated by Barcelona in the round of 16. The French club will look to get out of the group stage for their second straight season.
Manager Sylvinho’s team is led by the attacking combination of Moussa Dembele and Memphis Depay. The duo combined for 32 goals last season and have already combined for nine goals in the first five Ligue 1 games. They will be the focus of the attack against Zenit.
Zenit won the Premier Liga last season for the first time since the 2014-15 season to qualify for the Champions League for the first time since 2015-16. From 2011-16, Zenit qualified for the Champions League five times, advancing out the group stage three times. The Russian club bought Malcom from Barcelona for €40 million. The Brazilian is a creative playmaker, but unfortunately for Zenit, Malcom is not expected to play on Tuesday with a hip injury. Without Malcom, the Russian champions will turn to Artem Dzyuba, who leads the club with five goals and three assists this season.
