PGA power rankings: Sanderson Farms Championship
Welcome to FanSided Fantasy’s PGA power rankings for this week’s Sanderson Farms Championship, taking place at the Country Club of Jackson in Jackson, Mississippi.
This PGA power rankings article will cover the top 15 golfers for this week’s event, and each golfer will come along with a short blurb with some justification to their respective rankings. Before we do that let’s touch briefly on the history of this event.
I used to throw some basic blurbs about some things of note on the golf course at each particular event, but as we keep growing here at FanSided Fantasy, we have added a course breakdown expert in George Zainoun (@3Putts4Par) and you will find his course breakdown every week from here on out on the slide bar on the last page of these PGA power rankings.
PGA power rankings: Sanderson Farms Championship – History
The PGA Tour fall swing continues in Jackson, Mississippi this week for the Sanderson Farms Championship, and we are looking at another field dominated by the young guns on tour. Joaquin Niemann will be here following up his first career win last week at the Greenbrier, and he along with fellow second-year star Sungjae Im will highlight the field. The top veterans in the field include Brandt Snedeker and Lucas Glover.
The Sanderson Farms Championship has been played at the Country Club of Jackson every year since 2015, therefore we have some decent data to pull from this week for all of you course history buffs like myself. The C.C. of Jackson is a par 72 and will play fairly long at 7,400 yards. Bombers off the tee have had an advantage here in the past, as we saw with one of the longest hitters on tour in Cameron Champ grabbing his first career victory here last year.
Besides Champ, other recent champions here at the Sanderson Farms Championship include Ryan Armour, who won in 2017, and Canada’s Nick Taylor, who was victorious in the first year this event was moved to the C.C. of Jackson, back in 2015. Peter Malnati was the winner here in 2016, and all three past champions will be back this week looking for a second PGA Tour career victory. Ironically, this event has a trend of finding a first-time winner, who never happens to win again for whatever the reason may be.
It is another relatively weaker field. In fact, a little weaker than last week even. But there was no lack of excitement for me in watching my favorite young golfer in Joaquin Niemann come through and get his first win in decisive fashion. Can he do it again? I think he very easily could! All he needs to do is carry that hot putter into Mississippi where he will need it.
