Red Bull Salzburg face Genk at the Red Bull Arena Salzburg on Tuesday, Sept. 17. Here’s all the info you need to watch.
The Champions League group stage begins on Tuesday with Red Bull Salzburg hosting Genk. The two clubs are in a group with Liverpool and Napoli, who are heavily favored to advance out of the group. With the club that finishes third moving into the Europa League round of 32, the opening game against Salzburg and Genk could play a large role in determining which team will move into the Europa League.
Salzburg have won six straight Austrian Bundesliga titles and nine titles since the 2006-07 season. Die Mozartstadter have won their first seven games of the season and look like they are on their way to a seventh straight title.
Since Red Bull bought the Salzburg club in 2005, they have been in the Champions League qualifying round almost every season, but this is the first time since 1994-95 that Salzburg have qualified for the group stage and only the second time in club history. While Salzburg have not played in the Champions League, they have been successful in the Europa League recently. Die Mozartstadter were eliminated in the round of 16 by Napoli last year and reached the semifinal the year before that.
Salzburg signed 19-year-old Norweigan striker Erling Braut Haland in the summer to replace Munas Dabbur, who was sold to Sevilla after leading the club in scoring with 37 goals and 16 assists. In only eight games, Haland has 14 goals and five assists and looks like one of the brightest young talents in all of Europe.
Genk won the Belgian Jupiler Pro League to qualify for the Champions League group stage for the third time in club history. The two previous times that the Smurfs were in the group stage, they finished fourth in their group. Genk will be in tough against Red Bull Salzburg as their top scorer, Mbwana Samatta could miss the game with a knee injury. Samatta scored 32 goals last season and has found the back of the net five times this year. The loss of Samatta will be incredibly difficult for the Smurfs to replace.
