WWE Clash of Champions 2019 review: Highlights, takeaways and projections
By Luke Norris
Highlights, takeaways and what’s next for the Superstars of WWE following Sunday night’s Clash of Champions pay-per-view event.
Following a one-year hiatus from the WWE pay-per-view calendar, Clash of Champions returned on Sunday night from the Spectrum Center in Charlotte, North Carolina and as per usual, every single title in WWE was on the line.
Also as per usual, the WWE Cruiserweight Championship match was included on the Kickoff Show and the three men involved, champ Drew Gulak, Lince Dorado and Humberto Carrillo put on a very good performance. Carrillo got a real chance to shine in this matchup, even if he wasn’t able to claim the gold. Gulak pinned Dorado for the win, which should set up a one-on-one match with Carrillo in the near future.
Also on the Kickoff Show was the WWE United States Championship match between AJ Styles and Cedric Alexander. This match didn’t get a ton of time but it was a fun sprint in which Alexander nearly got the win but just couldn’t close things out. His time is coming but the Phenomenal One walked away with the victory. There’s a ton to get to on the main card so let’s jump in.
RAW Tag Team Championship Match
Seth Rollins & Braun Strowman (c) vs. Dolph Ziggler & Robert Roode
I predicted that this match would open the main card and it was the right call. Seth Rollins and Braun Strowman needed to get this one in ahead of their title match later on and while we didn’t get a turn from Braun, he did accidentally cost his team the matchup and the titles by inadvertently knocking Robert “Don’t Call me Bobby” Roode into Rollins. Roode then hit the Glorious DDT to pick up the win. It wasn’t a great match but it was good enough and got done what it needed to get done.
What’s next: Well, we know what happened next with Rollins and Strowman in their WWE Universal Championship Match and we’ll get to all of that shortly. As for Ziggler and Roode, I really like this team and I think they can have a nice run with the Raw Tag Team Championship. It finally seems that Ziggler has some sort of direction, even if it’s in the tag division, and I hope they continue to have good matches with more of the good teams on Monday nights.
