American Horror Story returns for a ninth season, and the newest incarnation of the franchise features a totally rad blast into the past with American Horror Story 1984. Let’s take a look at what we know about this new season.
AHS 1984 marks the first time that Sarah Paulson and Evan Peters won’t be part of the cast, though don’t be surprised if they somehow make an unannounced guest appearance at some point. Both Paulson and Peters are working with Murphy on his many other projects, so it could happen.
Returning cast members include Emma Roberts, Billie Lourd, Leslie Grossman and Cody Fern, who will be joined by lots of new faces this season.
Here’s the synopsis of episode 901, “Camp Redwood”:
"A group of young friends set out for a summer of fun when they hit the road to Camp Redwood to work as counselors."
As you can see from the trailer, Ryan Murphy and company are really taking the ’80s camp theme to heart this season. From the blood-splattered teasers to leg warmers and Jazzercize, there has never been a season with such an overt theme from the start. It makes us think that Murphy might have something up his sleeve.
The opening credits have a definite ’80s vibe to them, too.
Fans of the AHS franchise will be eager to see how 1984 might tie into the larger American Horror Story universe, especially after the series got a “reset” in season 8’s Apocalypse when Mallory turned back time to prevent Michael Langdon from bringing forth the end of the world. The connection could be overt, or it could be very subtle. You never know until things get started.
