The Champions League returns on Wednesday with two of the title contenders meeting in Madrid. Atletico Madrid host Juventus at the Wanda Metropolitano Stadium. A year ago, the two clubs played against each other in the round of 16. Atletico won the first leg 2-0 in Madrid but Juventus advanced after winning 3-0 in Turin.
Atletico look significantly different from the team that lost to Juventus last season. Diego Simeone signed eight new players but sold 12 others. Despite all of the changes, Atletico will play the same hard-nosed style that Simeone has employed since being named manager in 2011. Atleti’s prized acquisition this summer was Portuguese teenager Joao Felix, who will start in the front two with Diego Costa. The duo could create challenges for a Juventus back four that does not have much experience playing together.
Juventus are desperate to end their Champions League drought. The club has lost five finals since winning their lone Champions League title in 1996. In recent years, Juventus have gone all in, signing players from across Europe, hoping to capture the one trophy that has eluded them.
Matthijs de Ligt, Danilo Aaron Ramsey and Adrien Rabiot were among the new players brought into the club. De Ligt will start next to Leonardo Bonucci and in place of injured Juventus captain Giorgio Chiellini at center-back. The 19-year-old de Ligt was incredible during Ajax’s run to the semifinal. Ramsey and Rabiot will patrol midfield for Juventus and try to create chances for Cristiano Ronaldo. The Portuguese superstar is always a threat to score, especially on the biggest stages when he ups his game.
