Breaking down Jalen Ramsey’s best fits and trade ideas
By Ian Wharton
Philadelphia Eagles
Proposed trade: 2020 1st rounder, WR J.J. Arcega-Whiteside, CB Avonte Maddox
Why they should do it:
Few teams own the roster depth and ability to move assets like the Philadelphia Eagles do. Howie Roseman has done a wonderful job building the roster to this point, and now he can cash in on several of his assets to get a true difference-maker at a position of major weakness. Ramsey would allow Jim Schwartz to be more versatile with his coverages and not be as worried about the holes that spring loose routinely with these corners.
The locker room is strong, and the Eagles are masterful with their cap manipulation. His extension coincides right with several of their more expensive contracts will be off the books. The Eagles are a nearly-perfect fit as long as Roseman is comfortable continuing to own the tight margins.
Why they shouldn’t:
Things get sticky if Ramsey wants his payday right after this year. The Eagles can move some money around, but are mostly leveraged through 2020. Saying goodbye to Brandon Brooks or Nigel Bradham one-year early would be a painful sacrifice considering the team would be losing their top pick and recent other investments for Ramsey.
Beyond that, there are already five or six considerable contracts on the books. There’s going to be a large amount of dead cap that’s created at some point when guys like DeSean Jackson, Malik Jackson and Alshon Jeffrey are no longer needed.
The Eagles should absolutely go for this deal if offered.
