The Stanford Cardinal are searching for a way to salvage their season. The Oregon Ducks are hoping to salvage their shot at the College Football Playoffs. A loss in this matchup would derail either teams’ goals.

Stanford really, really needs a win to bounce back from what has been a disappointing start to the season. The Cardinal have fallen short of where they theoretically could be right now. And now, they’re facing off against fellow Pac-12 North member Oregon in a game that could define the season for both teams.

Oregon, in a similar way, is also seeking to bounce back from a disappointing start. But, Oregon falling to Auburn in Arlington to start the season certainly isn’t the same level of set back as what Stanford is struggling to overcome. The Ducks are simply trying to make their case that they still deserve a chance to play in the playoffs at the end of the season.

In this game, the Ducks and the Cardinal both need a win. A loss would prevent either team from being able to bounce back from their relatively slow starts.

Prediction

It wasn’t that long ago that this game was one that drew nationwide attention. The Ducks and the Cardinal would clash in contests that were the defining games of the Pac-12 for a few years. Chip Kelly’s electrifying and innovative offense challenged Stanford’s stout defense and more traditional, conservative methods of football.

But this game probably won’t draw the attention that those games did. And this game probably won’t be all that close. The Cardinal currently has a three-game winning streak over Oregon. Expect that streak to be snapped.

Score: Oregon 38, Stanford 20
