Joe Burrow, Justin Fields and Tua Tagovailoa headline our Top 10 college football players of the week for their performances in Week 4 but none were bigger than what Anthony Gordon did for Washington State vs. UCLA.
Quarterbacks continue to put up video-game numbers across the country and Week 5 saw a few record-breaking performances. Ohio State quarterback Justin Fields scored six total touchdowns in the second quarter vs. Miami (OH). LSU quarterback Joe Burrow threw a program-record six touchdowns in another convincing win for the Tigers. The last game of the week saw Washington State quarterback Anthony Gordon break Gardner Minshewās school record for touchdowns in a game with nine vs. UCLA.
Those three quarterbacks make up our Top 10 college football players of the week for their performances in Week 4.
College football players of the week
Honorable Mentions:
- Elijah Mitchell, RB, Louisiana Lafayette ā 17 car, 143 yds, 3 TD
- Henry Ruggs III, WR, Alabama ā 4 rec, 148 yds, 2 TD
- Scotty Washington, WR, Wake Forest ā 9 rec, 141 yds, 2 TD
- Jonathan Taylor, RB, Wisconsin ā 23 car, 203 yds, 2 TD
- Sam Ehlinger, QB, Texas ā 20/28 att, 281 yds, 4 TD, 1 Int
In a must-win game for Texasā playoff hopes, Ehlinger came through clutch against a pesky conference foe in Oklahoma State. Ehlinger was sharp all night long excluding the lone interception, showing his hefty arm strength and quick release.
10. JaāMarr Chase, WR, LSU
- 10 rec, 229 yds, 4 TD
Joe Burrowās favorite deep threat against Vanderbilt cashed in for 10 catches and four touchdowns in a high-scoring SEC affair. Chaseās monster game is the first 200-yard receiving game by a Tiger since Odell Beckham Jr. Pretty elite company to be in.
9. Jamie Newman, QB, Wake Forest
- 27/35 att, 351 yds, 5 TD, 1 Int
Jamie Newman has erupted in his junior season with the Demon Deacons after turning in another multi-touchdown game against Elon. The quarterback now has had at least three touchdowns in three of the teamās first four victories in 2019.
8. Chase Young, EDGE, Ohio State
- 2 sack-fumbles, 1 assisted tackle
The best defensive prospect heading into the 2020 NFL Draft increased his popularity on Saturday with two more quality pass rushes resulting in sack-fumbles. Youngās mix of speed and strength as a defensive end has led to seven sacks in just four games.
7. Tua Tagovailoa, QB, Alabama
- 17/21 att, 293 yds, 5 TD
One of the most incredibly efficient college quarterbacks I have ever seen produced another great outing with ease against Southern Mississippi. Tagovailoa may not have won the Heisman last season, but his 17 touchdowns, zero interception start has been flawless for the Crimson Tide.
6. Tommy DeVito, QB, Syracuse
- 27/35 att, 287 yds, 4 TD
- 8 car, 84 yds, TD
A frustrating 2-2 start to the season for the Orange has left fans criticizing the play of the teamās young sophomore quarterback, but DeVito responded to the critics against Western Michigan on Saturday. Five total touchdowns for DeVito in a much-needed win.
5. Brock Purdy, QB, Iowa State
- 21/27 att, 435 yds, 3 TD, 1 Int
- 9 car, 75 yds, 3 TD
Iowa State dominated Louisiana-Monroe putting up 72 points in large part to its quarterback Brock Purdy. Purdy found his groove both running and throwing for the Cyclones in a rout following the teamās loss to Iowa.
4. Joe Burrow, QB, LSU
- 25/34 att, 398 yds, 6 TD
Joe Burrow is quickly becoming one of the more exciting quarterbacks in college football. With the weight of a playoff-hungry fanbase on his shoulders, Burrow continues to block out the noise and feast on opposing defenses. Burrowās performance against Vanderbilt also set a record for passing touchdowns in a single game.
3. Dorian Thompson-Robinson, QB, UCLA
- 19/29 att, 507 yds, 5 TD
- 11 car, 57 yds, 2 TD
Dorian Thompson-Robinson had the game of his life in UCLAās 67-63 win over Washington State. The Bruins scored 50 in the second half and overcame a 42-17 deficit but rallied on the arm and feet of DTR. This could be a season-saving, program-defining win for Chip Kelly who was desperate for one.
2. Justin Fields, QB, Ohio State
- 14/21 att, 223 yds, 4 TD
- 9 car, 36 yds, 2 TD
Chalk up another ridiculous performance from Justin Fields as the quarterback led the Buckeyes to 76 points against Miami (OH). Fields continues to dominate the teamās weaker part of the schedule and it will be interesting to see how the young talent handles his first big game as a starting quarterback.
1. Anthony Gordon, QB, Washington State
- 41/61 att, 570 yards, 9 TD
Washington State quarterbacks are used to putting up gaudy statistics. Anthony Gordon did just that vs. UCLA in what turned into a defense-optional shootout. Gordon broke the school record previously held by Gardner Minshew set last year by two. But it wasnāt enough for Washington State to beat UCLA who overcame a 42-17 third-quarter deficit and scored 50 second-half points. You throw nine touchdowns though, youāre getting top honors.
