All Malcolm Bright wants is to escape his past, but the gifted criminal profiler is drawn back to his family ties to help the NYPD solve their biggest cases. Prodigal Son is a thrilling new drama featuring Tom Payne and Michael Sheen.
Tom Payne (The Walking Dead) portrays Bright, who worked as a criminal profiler for the FBI until he lost his job. A not-so-chance encounter with an old friend, NYPD Detective Gil Arroyo (Lou Diamond Phillips), brings Bright onto a tough case that’s all too familiar. It looks exactly like a string of murders committed by Bright’s father, Dr. Martin Whitly. Whitly, also known as The Surgeon, was one of New York’s most notorious serial killers.
All Bright has wanted to do was to get over his haunting past. His sister has been able to move on, but their mother is a whole other story. She’s moved on, but she has her own idea about how to do it and it involves trying to control her children’s lives.
Tom Payne is the perfect actor to play Bright. Not only is he sharp, but his days on The Walking Dead have given him the kind of understated physicality needed for the role. The interplay between Bright and Arroyo feels very natural, and it’s a great juxtaposition to Bright and Whitly. Sheen is in his glory as the unrepentant serial killer, and he’s very fun to watch.
