Things have come a long way for plane crashes on television shows. Lost set the bar pretty darn high, and these days it’s more about the mystery behind the crash than the crash itself. Enter Emergence, ABC’s new drama that centers on a mysterious plane crash. In this case, it’s not about the crash because the real mystery is a little girl with no memory.
The story centers around a police chief, Jo (Allison Tollman), who encounters a child near a plane-crash site. The child, Piper (Alexa Swinton) has no memory of who she is or what happened, and Jo decides to bring her home to help her and keep her safe while they conduct an investigation.
What Jo doesn’t realize is that she is now part of something bigger than she could ever imagine, and Piper is at the center of it all.
Emergence offers the kind of mystery that viewers can engage with, but unlike Lost, there isn’t a complex mythology involving islands and polar bears to bog down the story. (Lost was amazing, but it was way ahead of its time.) Everything about Emergence suggests that it’s the perfect balance of drama and intrigue, making it a must-watch new show this fall TV season.
