Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs might be unstoppable
The AFC West is struggling as a whole, but the Kansas City Chiefs and quarterback Patrick. Mahomes are enjoying an epic roll.
A trend is developing in the AFC West.
The Kansas City Chiefs are really good and the rest division doesn’t appear to be. For the second week in a row in this young season, Kansas City was the only AFC West team to win in Week 3.
Let’s take a look at this week’s risers and fallers in the AFC West:
Risers
Patrick Mahomes and Chiefs in the NFL grand scheme: Kansas City is threatening to run away with the AFC West title at 3-0. It leads the Chargers and the Raiders (with an impressive head-to-head victory) two games and lead the winless Broncos by three games. But this is deeper than just the division, After dispatching a strong Baltimore team in Week 3, Mahomes and the Chiefs let the rest of the NFL that they are going to be one of the league’s best teams this season. This team was a flipped coin from going to the Super Bowl last season. Mahomes and this team, in general, is showing that it is even better this season.
Keenan Allen: The bright spot of the Chargers is their star receiver. He is leading the NFL in receptions with 29 and receiving yards with 404. He also has three touchdowns catches. Allen’s worst game of the season was in Detroit when he had eight catches for 98 catches. Yes, he’s having a monster season.
Darren Waller: The Oakland tight end is also putting up impressive numbers. He has 26 catches. Waller, a first-year starter, had 13 receptions in Oakland’s loss at Minnesota in Week 3. It was one shy of the franchise record. Waller, 27, had 18 career catches before this season. He’s one his way to a huge season. The Raiders thought they had a breakout star in Waller and they may be right.
Fallers
The Broncos’ defense: Vic Fangio was a great defensive coordinator. He hasn’t been a great head coach yet. Not only are the Broncos 0-3, but Fangio’s defense stinks. Remarkably, the Broncos don’t have a sack, interception or fumble recovery this season. And Fangio is working with some good players. It’s one of the more strange happenings of the early NFL season.
The Chargers’ playoff chase: The Chargers went 12-4 last season and they were expected to be a Super Bowl contender. Yet, they are 1-3. Yes, this team has started slow before and yes, they can turn things around, especially with games against Miami, Denver, Pittsburgh and Tennessee coming up. Those teams are a combined 1-11. Still, these show starts have to be annoying for the Chargers’ brass.
Jon Gruden: Gruden’s Raiders do not look good. He added more players than any other team in both of his season since returning to the Raiders, it has not worked. The Raiders are 5-14 in 19 games in his second go-round in Oakland. Thus, Oakland owner Mark Davis is not getting much out of his 10-year, $100 million investment in Gruden. It is too early to consider Gruden’s return a bust. But it is not too early to question if Gruden is the right person to fix the Raiders. Since winning 12 games in 2016, Oakland has went 11-24. This franchise has to get better. So far, Gruden hasn’t been able to do that.
