Detroit Tigers: The Tiger Carousel
It took years for Detroiters to embrace the new Comerica Park after they were unable to save Tiger Stadium. While I do understand how beloved the old park was, it just wasn’t on the same level as Fenway Park or Wrigley Field. There was no way to bring Tiger Stadium up to modern standards. Sometimes change is inevitable and good, and that is definitely the case with the new stadium in Detroit. Comerica Park is one of the underrated gems in baseball.
There are a few things working against Comerica in the overall ballpark ratings, namely its location. Detroit just isn’t going to be able to compete with the stunning views in Pittsburgh and San Francisco, and Camden Yards has the status as the original retro park. However, the Tigers home is up there among the best of all the parks built during the vintage stadium boom. It’s easily in the top five of all the new stadiums.
Comerica Park is a working man’s ballpark with great views of downtown Detroit. There are few high-end features and concessions that are not accessible for every fan, the Tigers offer more padded seats than any other team in the league and do it all without eye-popping ticket prices.
The Tigers built a simple ballpark that is not lacking on extra flourishes to help it keep up with some of the over-the-top parks being built around the league. There are sculpted Tigers scattered around the concourses, fountains and statues of franchise icons. The highlight of the entertainment options — aside from just watching the game — is a kids carousel with brilliantly-painted Tigers. It’s a throwback to another era, and a treat for any fan to watch, regardless of age.
