Rapoport: Davante Adams injury appears to not be serious
Following an early injury exit Thursday night, Green Bay Packers star wide receiver Davante Adams received good news on Friday about his turf toe injury.
NFL Insider Ian Rapoport reported that the Green Bay Packers have received good news on the health status of their star wide receiver, Davante Adams.
Adams was injured and ultimately removed from the game late in the Packers Thursday Night Football matchup against a fellow NFC contender in the Philadelphia Eagles. His departure may very well have ultimately led to Green Bay’s inability to score from deep in the red zone to tie the game late in the fourth quarter.
After the game, it was reported that Adams was suffering from a turf toe injury. Many NFL fans know that a turf toe injury could result in a player missing a significant amount of time — up to four months, according to some sources. NFL teams have seen this injury linger in players, especially receivers, for months before they’re ever back to full strength.
Adams’ injury comes at a particularly bad time for the Packers. The team 3-1 after a bit of a resurgence from quarterback Aaron Rodgers over the first four games, and three very strong games from their defense, but the injury comes right before Green Bay faces its biggest test of the season against the NFC frontrunner Dallas Cowboys in Week 5.
Adams has been the No. 1 offensive weapon for Rodgers this year, amassing 25 receptions and 378 yards in the season’s first four games. Certainly one would think that a long-term injury may have motivated the Packers to swing a deal for another wideout in the next couple of weeks. Meanwhile, it would also put a damper on the Packers’ strong start and aide the chances of other teams in the North, and across the NFC, in pursuit of the Super Bowl. The news that his injury does not appear serious certainly must change the way that Green Bay, and teams across the NFC, view the Packers moving forward.
It will be essential for the team to correctly manage the injury so that it does not linger all season. That will be a difficult balance given the strength of the NFC North and the strong start to the season for Green Bay. The team will no doubt be eager to get him back on the field. Adams could play through the pain, much like other receivers like Julio Jones have in the past. However, coach Matt LaFleur would be wise to make sure he’s back to full health before the injury lingers all season long and Adams potentially misses other, more important games down the road.
It is too early to tell whether or not Adams will even be a consideration next week against the Cowboys, but certainly this is a time where Green Bay has to be happy to have the extra days off before they play again after playing on Thursday Night Football.
