After an upset scare by North Carolina, Clemson drops out of the No. 1 spot in the AP Poll and Alabama and Ohio State are eying the top spot.

Can we all agree that Week 5 was a letdown for college football fans? Games that looked to be upset-worthy on paper turned out to be blowouts.

Let’s start with Friday night as the Penn State Nittany Lions traveled to Maryland and it just had the feel of another major upset but turned out to be the exact opposite. The Terrapins were hoping to win and get back into the AP Poll in Week 6, but the Nittany Lions blew the doors off Maryland en route to a 59-0 win.

But later that night, Arizona State went on the road to upset Cal and knock the Golden Bears down in the rankings.

On Saturday, the morning slate was pretty quiet outside of a couple of disappointing performances from Wisconsin and Texas A&M.

Clemson nearly fell to an upset in the afternoon slate to North Carolina as Mack Brown nearly pulled a rabbit out of his hat, but it fell short on a failed two-point conversion.

Notre Dame handled Virginia by two scores as did Washington with USC and these were the only two ranked matchups of the week.

And in the night slate, the big game was Ohio State at Nebraska which was supposed to be a good Big Ten battle but was anything but as the Buckeyes blew the Cornhuskers out.

So with that, what could the rankings look like come Sunday afternoon?

Week 6 AP Poll projected rankings

  1. Alabama
  2. Clemson
  3. Georgia
  4. Ohio State
  5. LSU
  6. Oklahoma
  7. Auburn
  8. Wisconsin
  9. Notre Dame
  10. Florida
  11. Texas
  12. Penn State
  13. Oregon
  14. Washington
  15. Iowa
  16. Boise State
  17. Utah*
  18. Michigan
  19. UCF
  20. Texas A&M
  21. Oklahoma State
  22. Cal
  23. Virginia
  24. Michigan State
  25. Wake Forest

As you can see, there’s a new No. 1 in this week’s poll, at least in my opinion, as Alabama has looked like a much better team this season than Clemson. I also have Notre Dame moving up a spot over Florida in the top 10 as the Fighting Irish had a much more impressive Week 5 win.

Also, I think Ohio State is worthy of a top-four ranking after going on the road and dismantling Nebraska.
