Sampdoria are presently bottom of Serie, and new coach Eusebio Di Francesco’s position is already under serious threat. His side’s 2-1 away loss to fellow strugglers Fiorentina on Wednesday only increased the pressure he’s under.
While title challengers Juventus and Napoli have looked much the same as last year, Inter Milan appear to have been transformed under Antonio Conte. Their domestic form has been ominously consistent, although they needed goalkeeper Samir Handanovic to be at his best to beat a fine Lazio team on Wednesday, eventually prevailing courtesy of an early Danilo D’Ambrosio goal.
That victory left Inter with the only 100 percent record in the Italian top-flight after five games, and they sit two points clear at the summit of the table coming into this round of games.
Their form in Europe hasn’t been anywhere near as good, however. They were woeful at home against unfancied Slavia Prague in the Champions League and were fortunate to emerge with a 1-1 draw in a game that they deserved to lose. Still, their fans will care little about European failure if Conte manages to bring home a first scudetto since 2010.
