Questions over the future of Real Madrid head coach Zinedine Zidane understandably reached fever pitch following his side’s humiliating 3-0 away loss to Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League.
Since then, however, the players have shown that they remain committed to the coach – even those such as Gareth Bale and James Rodriguez whom Zidane spent much of the summer trying to offload.
An impressive 0-1 away victory over Sevilla, who were top of the table at the time, was followed by a straightforward 2-0 home win on Wednesday over an Osasuna side that had caused Barcelona plenty of problems a few weeks earlier.
Some of the questions being asked of Zidane are valid, however. Above all, despite now being in his fourth season at the club and having many players at his disposal who were in the squad when he first took over, his side still don’t have a recognizable style of play.
Much of the talk around Atletico Madrid has focused on whether coach Diego Simeone will ever be able to get the best out of extravagantly talented record signing Joao Felix. Atleti were perhaps a little unfortunate to only emerge with one point from their games against Real Sociedad and Celta Vigo, having come up against some inspired goalkeeping in those matches.
